look.. when I tell you they have accommodated me for every event I have ever had.. I've been supporting them back to when Laura kubiak was there. The past few years I have hosted my annual Christmas party there and not one complaint, food, phenomenal! Fresh. Tasty. Plenty to go around. Service amazing! Price is more than fair. I have been there for several funeral banquets as well, food is consistently amazing... besides that I was an avid fish fry guy on Fridays and that is even better. Wish I could give more stars!! This evening My son and I sought to have dinner. But this wasn't to be a typical cookie cutter franchise establishment, it wasn't to be a theme restaurant with their typical flair, nor a high end eatery with lines of people waiting to indulge in the latest trend. Today we headed back in time, back to a bygone era, back to "The Old Neighborhood". Today we went to the south side of Chicago into its Hegewisch neighborhood. Located in an almost forgotten corner of Southeast Chicago, in an isolated blue collar community, two iconic eatery's remain facing each other, Steve's Lounge and the original Doreen's Pizzaria. Both have survived the white flight and loss of much of its former residents and as well displayed a resilience that though time and places may change, they've proved that holding true to one's self, traditions, customs, and quality way of life, that something's in life are worth retaining. Tonight we feasted on seafood courtesy of Steve's Lounge. We stepped back to when Friday evenings were celebrated with a trip to the local tavern and eating joints to give thanks to the end of another work week and treat oneself to a evening of having someone else prepare diner and cleanup after oneself. At Steve's in the tradition of the old fashion supper clubs a relish tray of complimentary garnishments came to greet us at our table. I'm happy to say I've not lost my appreciation of this working class custom of displaying a respect to one's guest by being presented an unasked for and gratuitous snack. Jovi and I took glee in enjoying the mix of cole slaw, cottage cheese, and sliced beets. Steve's is old school, still providing as well bread and butter to each table. A look around and one sees an older crowd. They are factory laborers, salt of the earth, working class people whom have remained in the community despite the fall in numbers of workers at the local plants and yards. Some like myself no longer have an "Old Neighborhood" in which we live and have returned here to an old neighborhood to reconnect with a better time, to a better way of life, when people came together as families and friends to share in the satisfaction of the end of another work week. How satisfying to witness tables seated with husbands and wives, grandparents with their children and grandchildren, and individuals unassuming dining alone. it's a beer and shots crowd, and I'm proud to join them in raising a glass. I'm not sharing any photos of the interior as I'm happy to say cellphones don't have a place in Steve's Lounge, just as they didn't exist in the 1970's, an era that much of what Steve's Lounge handsomely reflects, they respectfully aren't on display or in use by its customers and diners. I loved the 70's, understandable I should find value and admiration for a place like Steve's. I didn't need my phone tonight for music at dinner. The internal dial in my head was set to the 70's oldes station. It was only I who could hear, but I heard it clearly..... "Welcome back Your dreams were your ticket out Welcome back To that same old place that you laughed about" "We'll the names have all changed since you hung around But those dreams have remained and they've turned around Who'd have thought they'd lead ya Back here where we need ya" "Yeah we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot Welcome back Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back Welcome back, welcome back." ........nothing beats the old neighborhood. Do yourself a favor and find your way back! Like lightening in a bottle, hard work, the value of money, the love of family, the respect for others, and the appreciation of having a nice unpretentious meal is still out there waiting for you...looking to be found.

Although I still have problems with their banquet hall policies; and they once delivered my catering very, very late without a sincere apology. If I rate them on their food alone, then yes, they hands down have the best quality catered food in the vicinity. All of their prepared food tastes homemade. Their roast beef, polish sausage, and chicken (baked or fried) are all exceptional. Every once in a while, I still do enjoy their Friday fish fry which is also exceptional. Don't have enough time to prepare a delicious meal for your holiday guests? Well Steve's is your answer. Their delicious food will please even the pickiest eaters in your holiday party.

So we had a different meal this time from Steve's and I must say, it was outstanding! I had the pepper steak with rice with enough for leftovers for work! It was so delicious as well as the salad with homemade dressing. Laura again went above and beyond! I can't say enough about this place. Everyone must give them a try! You will go back every week or everyday.

Dive bar. Community meeting place Twilight Zone Small town feel Bar in Iowa Suburban feel The past. This bar is definitely in Chicago but it feels like it could be somewhere else. First off it's in like the southernmost part of the city close to Indiana. Ordered a Miller Genuine draft on draft. I also ordered a chicken dinner. I enjoyed the Chicken, came with tasty rolls. And some random beets, cottage cheese and coleslaw. I've had coleslaw before guess I thought the cottage cheese and beets were more random. Oh and potato pancakes. The last time I had potato pancakes were probably when I was on a family vacation when I was a kid. There were cans and bottles of a few craft beers but I didn't get the vibe folks really ordered them here. Had a Sox game on the tv. I don't really drink wine but certainly noticed some cheap wine behind the bar. This is definitely one of my more interesting dive bar experiences.
